Tax Attorney/Lawyer

If you feel that you want to work actively in the field of taxation, then you should consider becoming a tax attorney because of how much tax work you get to do. You’ll be working with both people and corporations going over their taxes since they’ll both have just as much trouble at times depending on how large their tax sum is and how irresponsible they’ve been. As a potential tax attorney, you’ll be working on both personal (individual) and corporate cases.

The most common types of taxes that you’ll be working with are:

  • Income (financial income and others, which all depends on how much the person or corporation makes)
  • Employment (money withheld from paychecks to pay for social security and Medicare)
  • Inheritance (estate tax/death duty and is held on transfer of property)
  • Capital gains (on profit of something bought at a lower price)
  • Property (on any property that person or corporation owns)
  • Gift (transfer tax on certain gifts such as lottery winnings)

Working on taxes with both individuals (people) and corporations as clients is extremely variegated for a tax lawyer because the taxation on these two entities are much different because of the amount of money they each have varies. Since each case is like comparing apples and oranges, you’ll have to look over the person’s individual taxes or the corporation’s overall taxes in order to understand what is going on through each individual case. Depending on which tax or taxes are being looked at during your case with the person or corporation, you’d have to prepare accordingly, as well as preparing them accordingly when you’re representing one versus the other.

When preparing for an individual or a business, you have to make sure that they are prepared for the upcoming events as well as informed by you by having their tax forms. However, you must also remember the taxation laws since they’ll impact how and if your case will work inside and outside of the courtroom. There are three types of taxes that you’ll have to worry about in regards to each of your case.

These taxes are:

  • Federal (apply to all people and corporations in the United States)
  • State (apply to all people and corporations in a certain state and not others)
  • Local (apply to all people and corporations in a certain town or city)
You’ll be thoroughly studying all of these taxes while training to be a tax attorney.
